What makes the Finnish Lake District unique?
The Lake District (Lakeland) is Europe's largest expanse of lakes. Most of Finland's 188,000 lakes are concentrated here, creating a maze of blue waters, wooded islands and canals that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Lake Saimaa and the landscapes of Punkaharju
Lake Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland and the fourth largest in Europe, with an area of 4,400 km² and more than 13,000 kilometres of shoreline. Its waters are home to the Saimaa ringed seal, a species unique in the world with only 400 individuals.
The Punkaharju Ridge, which we will walk on Day 3, is a 7-kilometre geological formation that is considered one of Finland's national landscapes. This narrow tongue of land between two lakes was declared a protected area as early as 1843 by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia.
The white nights of the Finnish summer
The circuit takes place between the end of June and the beginning of August, the time of the white nights. During these weeks, the sun barely sets and the sky is tinged with shades of gold and pink even at midnight. It is the perfect time to enjoy open-air lakeside dinners, evening walks and magical light that transforms the landscape.
